Mothers and Daughters

I have had the opportunity to look at many mother/daughter relationships, including mine with my own mom.  When we have a challenging mother/daughter dynamic ,on the very physical level we experience pain, disappointment, frustration and even anger.

From the daughter perspective we find ourselves always on the defense, defending our choices from what we eat, to what we wear, to who we spend our time with, to our work in the world.

As Moms we want the best for our daughters, maybe we don’t want them to make the mistake we made, maybe it’s competition energy, maybe it’s even jealousy or envy and maybe it’s about validation.  We feel our daughters should accept our input without question, simply because we are Mom.

Those with challenging mother/daughter relationships even find pain in the closeness of those moms and daughters who resonate so wonderfully that they are best friends, confidants, cheerleaders and a shoulder when things don’t go as planned.

Why do some mother/daughters have great relationships and others find such challenge? We need to move to a higher perspective to gather awareness of this very unique and powerful relationship dynamic. Relationships are our playground to do what we came here to do, which is to learn, heal and grow. We come into the world to evolve our Spiritual being and we do this essentially through our relationships.

If we want to learn about patience, at Spirit we create relationships that push us to develop patience.  If we want to be seen, we create relationships that challenge us to step up and be visible. On the physical plane if we live unconscious to why we are here – to learn, heal and grow; and we are unconscious to the lessons we have set up ; we can get lost in these lessons, falling deeper and deeper into the ‘anti’ of what it is that we wanted to experience this lifetime.

If you can bring yourself to see your relationship from this higher perspective, you just may realize that as mother and daughter you have made the strongest commitment to help each other learn, heal and grow in this lifetime. How these lessons are manifesting physically may need some addressing and some conscious insight, but who better to challenge us in standing up for ourselves than the woman we share the closest bond with? At the Spirit level, life is a game designed to lead us to be all that we can truly be -in body, in mind and in Spirit. Instead of directing your energy out at your mother or your daughter, reflect in and ask yourself “what am I trying to learn?”
